IPOB Blasts Nigeria’s Terrorism List, Calls It ‘Absurd Propaganda’

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised the Federal Government over its recently released terrorism sponsors list, describing the move as an attempt to stigmatise the group and weaken its campaign.

In a detailed statement issued on April 13, 2026, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said the list raises concerns about credibility and intent, alleging that it was designed to influence perception rather than present verifiable facts.

The group, led by Nnamdi Kanu, argued that the classification of individuals and organisations without clear evidence could undermine trust in the country’s counter-terrorism framework.

IPOB maintained that it remains a non-violent movement and rejected any association with terrorism, insisting that its activities are rooted in the pursuit of self-determination.

According to the statement, the organisation believes the publication forms part of a broader effort to discourage its supporters and reduce its influence, especially among international observers.

The group also warned that such labeling could have wider implications, including damaging reputations and escalating tensions if not handled with transparency and accountability.

IPOB referenced developments in the South-East, suggesting that existing security challenges in the region require careful and balanced approaches rather than what it described as blanket classifications.

On its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, the group reiterated that his continued detention remains a major concern, linking it to its broader agitation and calls for justice.

The statement further noted that IPOB operates within legal frameworks in some countries, a situation it says contradicts efforts to portray it as a terrorist organisation globally.

Despite the controversy, IPOB emphasized that it would not be deterred, stressing that its agitation for justice, dignity, and self-determination would continue.

The group concluded by calling for objective assessment of the situation, urging both local and international stakeholders to rely on facts and independent evaluation.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government has yet to respond to IPOB’s latest position.
