News Nation reports that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has strongly criticised the Anambra State Government over the alleged sealing of shops at the Onitsha Main Market following traders’ reported failure to open their businesses on Mondays.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the reported action as harsh and counterproductive, warning that punitive measures against traders could deepen public resentment and worsen tensions within the commercial city.

According to the statement, IPOB reiterated that its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has repeatedly called for an end to the sit-at-home and any violent enforcement associated with it. The group, however, maintained that individuals who still observe the exercise do so voluntarily based on personal convictions.

The organisation argued that sealing shops belonging to traders who have not been found guilty of any offence amounts to collective punishment and could damage trust between citizens and the state government. IPOB therefore called on Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to immediately reconsider the alleged action and reopen all affected businesses.

The group further urged authorities to adopt dialogue-driven approaches that encourage normal business activities while respecting the rights and dignity of residents.
